The murderer of an Akwa Ibom job seeker sentenced to death by hanging

Uduak Akpan, age 21, was found guilty of murdering Akwa Ibom job seeker Iniubong Umoren and was sentenced to death by hanging by the Akwa Ibom State High Court in Uyo, the state's capital. The deceased was a woman who was lured to his father's home in Uruan Local Government in April 2021 under the pretense of offering her a job.

The court also found the accused guilty of rape and sentenced him to life in prison for having carnal knowledge of the deceased. Justice Bassey Nkanang, the trial judge, rendered a decision on Thursday and released and acquitted the convict's sister Anwan Bassey and father Frank Akpan.

But as soon as the trial judge announced the sentence, there was commotion in the court as the convicted rushed to flee. The prisoner exited the dock and grabbed a defense attorney by the neck before security personnel intervened and grabbed him. Uko Udom (SAN), the state's attorney general and commissioner for justice, said after the court session and expressed satisfaction with the ruling.

"I appreciate the style and manner in which the presiding judge handled this situation. The judge was able to take a day off, tried the case piecemeal, and at the conclusion of the day, we obtained a ruling that the legal system is effective.

We are happy with how the case turned out. Samson Adula, Akpan's attorney, concurred that justice had been done. "Justice has been served; the defendant who was meant to be convicted has been found guilty, and the other two defendants have been released from custody or found not guilty.

This concludes the matter with justice." The defense attorney's job is to make sure the law was followed, not to win at all costs, he said.
