According to Sultan, Sharia law solely applies to Muslims only.

The 2022 Batch 'B' Stream 11 corps members in Sokoto State have received assurances from Alhaji Muhammad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, that the Shari'a Law is not applicable to non-Muslims living in the state. The guarantee was given by the Sultan on Thursday in his palace during a courtesy visit from the NYSC management team in the state, which was led by the state coordinator.

In addition, he reassured them that their safety is guaranteed despite the nation's security concerns. They were also promised by Abubakar that they could practice whichever faith they chose. He emphasized the fact that non-Muslims are not subject to Sharia law and that no one will be forced to convert to Islam against their will.

Nobody will make you wear the hijab or make you follow Islamic law if you are not a Muslim, he said, adding that Sharia law is solely applicable to Muslims in Sokoto.

He also challenged them to continue upholding the law and set an example for future generations. If you are assigned to a school, have an impact on the children' lives and leave them better off than when you found them, he added. The king advised them to show courtesy to their hosts' cultures and traditions.

"Contact the district head over there; they are your guardians in the community if you have an issue in the place of your primary assignment or where you are placed," he said. These corps members are exemplary in terms of discipline and adherence to camp rules and regulations, according to Alhaji Muhammad Nakamba, the NYSC State Coordinator.
