May Edochie takes legal action over alleged online attacks, demands ₦1.5 billion in damages.
May Yul-Edochie has filed a lawsuit at the Lagos State High Court against her former lawyer, Emeka Ugwuonye, Yinka Omolola Theisen, and other yet-to-be-identified social media users.
She is seeking ₦1.<br><br><br>5 billion in damages over alleged cyberbullying, defamation, and the leaking of her private information online.
According to court documents, May says she has endured years of coordinated attacks across blogs and Facebook pages. The alleged posts included false claims, edited photos, AI-generated images, and even death threats.<br><br><br>
She further stated that legal notices sent in 2025 were ignored, while new accounts allegedly continued to emerge to keep the attacks going.
May also accused her former lawyer, Emeka Ugwuonye, of breaching attorney-client confidentiality by allegedly sharing details from her case and publishing defamatory content.<br><br><br>
She is asking the court to award ₦1 billion against Ugwuonye and ₦500 million against Yinka Omolola Theisen. She also wants social media platforms ordered to remove the alleged defamatory posts and disclose the identities behind anonymous accounts.<br><br><br>
Justice Abdul-Raheem Tejumade Muyideen has ordered that the court papers be served, and the case has been adjourned for a service report.
If these allegations are proven, where should the law draw the line between freedom of expression and online harassment? And should people who use anonymous accounts to spread alleged falsehoods be held accountable?
