Update: VDM break Silence after his Arrest.

Read here: I didn’t authorise any purchases, my card was with me, nobody had access to it – VeryDarkMan According to punch newspaper, popular Nigerian social media influencer, Martins Vincent Otse, better known as VeryDarkMan, has defended himself following his arrest in Abuja by officers of the Nigeria Police Force.

The arrest, which reportedly came at the request of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), was linked to his recent public complaints about alleged unauthorised debits from his mother’s bank account. VeryDarkMan insists that neither he nor his mother authorised any such transactions, stating emphatically that his card was never compromised.

Speaking through his legal counsel, Barrister Deji Adeyanju, VeryDarkMan explained that the deductions, labeled as loan repayments, were made from his mother’s GTBank account despite the fact that she never applied for or received any loans from the bank.

Adeyanju confirmed that his client was arrested on Friday in Area 3, Abuja. “My client was arrested for simply raising concerns about suspicious banking activities. He did nothing wrong other than seeking answers about unexplained debits,” he said.

Before his arrest, VeryDarkMan had posted a series of videos and messages on his social media platforms, detailing the issues with GTBank. He recounted visiting a branch of the bank in Abuja with his mother to demand an explanation for the repeated deductions. “We just arrived at GTBank to get an explanation for the constant debit from her account by GTBank in the name of loan repayments that she never took,” he posted.

“In this year alone, there have been more than seven debits with different amounts. We are requesting her statement to know when this started.

” In his defense, VeryDarkMan stressed that his mother’s account details and associated debit card were never shared or exposed to any third party. Drawing a parallel with a similar incident, he cited his own vigilance, saying, “I didn’t authorise any purchases. My card was with me.

Nobody had access to it.” His comments reflect a growing concern among Nigerian banking customers about alleged breaches and errors that result in financial loss. This case is not isolated. Just weeks earlier, on April 14, 2025, another GTBank customer, Ariyo Ahmed Adewale, accused the bank of orchestrating his arrest after he protested inside a Lagos branch over alleged unauthorised transactions.

According to Ariyo, GTBank claimed the charges were made on Jumia using his debit card, an assertion he strongly refuted. “I have never used Jumia in my life.

My card and phone were with me. I didn’t authorise any transaction,” he said, also requesting a detailed bank statement to challenge the bank’s explanation. The repeated pattern of arrests following customer complaints has raised alarm among Nigerians and triggered conversations on social media regarding consumer rights and banking accountability.

Advocacy groups and legal professionals have called for an independent investigation into the handling of such complaints by financial institutions. Many argue that instead of addressing the root of customers' concerns, some banks appear more focused on silencing dissent.

As the controversy surrounding VeryDarkMan’s arrest continues, his supporters have taken to online platforms to demand transparency and justice. Meanwhile, his legal team is working to secure his release and explore legal options to address what they describe as a clear case of intimidation.

GTBank has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident. The unfolding situation underscores the urgent need for banks to improve their response mechanisms to customer complaints and ensure that consumer protection laws are upheld.
